How a Forklift Works

A forklift is a highly efficient industrial handling vehicle widely used in warehouses

First of all, the hydraulic system provides the lifting power for the entire forklift. When the operator activates the lifting lever, the hydraulic pump driven by the engine or electric motor starts to work continuously, converting mechanical energy into hydraulic pressure energy. The hydraulic oil is pressurized and delivered to the lifting cylinder. As the oil pressure inside the cylinder rises, the piston rod pushes the forklift mast upward steadily. Meanwhile, the fork carriage and fork tines mounted on the mast rise synchronously to lift the goods off the ground. When lowering the load, the hydraulic control valve releases the pressure, and the oil flows back to the oil tank, allowing the forks and cargo to descend slowly under gravity. In addition, the tilt cylinder can adjust the forward and backward angle of the mast. Tilting the mast backward tightens the goods to prevent sliding, while tilting forward helps unload materials smoothly.
Secondly, the counterbalance system guarantees forklift safety during loading. The counterbalance forklift, which is the most common type, is equipped with a heavy cast iron counterweight at the rear body. When the forks carry heavy loads at the front, the forward gravity torque generated by the cargo is offset by the reverse torque of the rear counterweight. This mechanical balance principle effectively prevents the forklift from tipping forward during lifting, traveling and stacking. Every forklift has a fixed rated load capacity and standard load center distance. Overloading or using an oversized load center will break the balance and cause potential safety hazards.
Thirdly, the power and driving system supports the whole vehicle’s operation. Internal combustion forklifts use diesel, gasoline or LPG engines to provide power for driving and hydraulic systems, featuring strong power and adaptability for outdoor and heavy-duty working conditions. Electric forklifts rely on lithium batteries or lead-acid batteries to drive traveling motors and hydraulic motors, with the advantages of low noise, zero emission and energy saving, which are more suitable for indoor and environmentally friendly scenarios. The forklift adopts rear-wheel steering, which realizes a small turning radius and flexible operation in narrow warehouse passages.
In addition, modern forklifts are equipped with safety protection devices such as load limiters, speed limit systems, and hydraulic overload protection valves. These auxiliary structures stabilize the lifting speed, avoid sudden falling of goods, and greatly improve the overall operation safety. With the continuous upgrading of the industry, intelligent forklifts also add automatic sensing and height recognition functions, realizing more accurate and intelligent cargo handling.
